Key Responsibilities
Winter Control Operators play a crucial role in maintaining safe road conditions during the winter months. Key duties include:
- Operating equipment like tractors with plow attachments to clear snow and ice efficiently.
- Performing manual snow clearing and salting tasks on roadways.
- Ensuring compliance with safety standards under the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Highway Traffic Act.
- Removing obstacles that pose hazards to public safety or interfere with vehicle operations.
- Reporting incidents like vandalism, equipment issues, or unsafe conditions promptly.
- Actively participating in a team-oriented environment and performing additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
To succeed in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Education and Experience: A minimum of a Grade 12 education and at least one year of experience in operating heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, or tractors under winter conditions. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.
- Licensing: A valid Class G driver’s license is required. A Class DZ license is an asset. Applicants must provide a clean driver’s abstract confirming their license is in good standing.
- Physical Fitness: The role involves physical activities such as lifting, shoveling, raking, and climbing, often in challenging weather conditions.
- Soft Skills: Strong communication skills, reliability, and the ability to work independently or in a team are essential. Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act is also necessary.
Work Schedule and Compensation
This temporary role runs from November 2024 to mid-April 2025. Hours are determined on a call-in basis, with shifts ranging from 4 to 12 hours, depending on snowstorm activity. Operators may work up to 60 hours per week, including weekends. Pay is $27.88 per hour, with a mandatory orientation session scheduled for November 2024.
